Hello, Salt Spring Island!

Image of a piece of paper, folded like a tent and covering a rock. Text says: "Paper Covers Rock, 3-4 October 2025, Salt Spring Island, BC; workshops, live readings, music, and creative sparks shared in good company."

October 3–4, 2025, I’ll be on Salt Spring Island for the Paper Covers Rock festival. On the 4th (2:00–3:30pm) I’ll give my Sentences with Style workshop.

Paper Covers Rock is not your typical literary festival. For one thing, it’s on a glorious Gulf island, far removed from bustling urban centres.

For another, it’s aimed at more than just writers. As founder Terri Potratz said in a recent e-newsletter, she envisioned the festival as “a gathering where writers, non-writers, readers, artists, creatives, and the curious could sit together and leave with something new. A spark of inspiration, a shift in perspective, a reminder of our shared humanity and how we can communicate our human experience on the page, poem, screen, song, or beyond.”

I’ve been curious about this festival since first hearing about it a few years ago. This year I threw my hat in the ring, pitched a workshop, and lo and behold, will be there.

Maybe you’ll be there too?

Beside the front door to a building is a white stand-up banner. It has red, blue and yellow triangles at the bottom, a palm-down hand at the top, and a fist in the middle. It says "Paper Covers Rock, Salt Spring Island Readers & Writers Festival."
