A horror-flying adventure

To the right are images of Frances's novel covers for The Broken Places and Uncontrolled Flight.

Hands down, it’s the most unusual book promotion I’ve done. Get in a small plane piloted by a horror writer, let a fan who’s never flown a plane before (gulp!) take the controls, and fly into the wild blue sky.

That’s exactly what I did on August 31, 2025. And I survived to tell the tale.

Horror Flying, a YouTube series, is the brainchild of Janine Cross, pilot, author, and president of Greater Vancouver Horror Writers. While my writing isn’t horror, it is what Janine calls “dark literature.” So she invited me to take a fan flying. Or, in this case, to let a fan take me.

Cut to Dhana Musil, a writer from West Vancouver. Last year she read Uncontrolled Flight and emailed me: “I’m on page 154 of your book and I literally cannot put it down. Started it the night before last. Went to bed thinking about it. Woke up thinking about it. Now I’m on a plane Texas bound reading it.” On a plane, reading about a plane crash. It confirmed what I suspected about Dhana. She is fearless.

How did things go? Was our flight controlled or the other kind? See for yourself!
