I was on the ferry to Victoria when a writer messaged me to say congratulations on making the Globe 100 book list. My first thought was “Whaaat?” That was also my second and third thought. I believe it made up the bulk of my reply to her as well.
But it’s true! The Globe and Mail chose The Broken Places as one of the best books of 2022 (Canadian fiction category). I floated the rest of the way to Victoria, and I’ve been floating ever since, on the thrill of being part of a list that includes the likes of Emily St. John Mandel, Billy-Ray Belcourt, Guy Gavriel Kay, Celeste Ng, and a relatively unknown guy named Stephen King.
