Book night in Nanaimo

Windowseat Books, in Nanaimo’s Old City Quarter, is that bookstore we all want to visit. Friendly, curated, and eclectic, this cozy shop hosted an intimate launch on September 26, 2023, to celebrate Danial Neil’s latest novel, The Sum of One Man’s Pleasure.

I sat down with Dan, a Nanaimo resident and fellow NeWest Press author, to discuss his book, a meditative and immersive story set in the late 1950s and early 60s, when the RCMP headed up a purge of suspected Communists and homosexuals in Canada. As different as our novels are, we explored elements they have in common, including time-hopping structures, British Columbia settings, and characters who harbour deep, destructive secrets.

Thanks to Windowseat and the Nanaimo/Gabriola readers who came out for the launch. Look for Dan’s novel wherever you buy books, or treat yourself to a trip to Nanaimo and experience the warmth of Windowseat for yourself.
